Pizza or Pasta Hut?

We had lunch at a 'Pizza Hut' over the weekend, and were confused with the whole 'Pasta Hut' scenario. I refused to believe that my favorite pizza restaurant was changing it's name, so I did what anyone in search for information would do: I googled it. There it read:

LONDON - Fifty-year-old restaurant chain Pizza Hut is temporarily changing its name to Pasta Hut in a radical £100m relaunch.

With the introduction of 8 new pasta dishes (but the same number of pizzas on the menu), Pizza Hut signs are currently being taken down in attempts to promote a new "healthy eating" image.

Pasta is not any healthier than pizza though, is it? It's all made of carbs. Although change is sometimes good, I think it will confuse the public. They will definitely have to do more than just a name change. It will be interesting to see how it all works out.

When you think of pizza, you immediately think of Pizza Hut..or maybe that's just me.

What if they just called it "The Hut"?

very bad idea to change the name. people have known and trusted the name forever, so changing it will just cause confusion. people go to chain restaurants because they know they will always get the same quality and standards worldwide. if they want to go for a "healthier" image, they'd be better off changing their logo colours. red is associated with most "unhealthy" fast food places (pizza hut, mcdonald's, burger king, kfc, domino's, etc.). psychologically, when people see a colour like green, for example, it automatically makes them feel they are choosing a healthier option.

agreed rosh. great example using green: Subway

i personally would not order from a place called Pasta Hut because it would make me think it was some rip off version of Pizza Hut.

secondly, i like the commercials in the states for the new pastas offered at Pizza Hut.

it takes place in a restaurant and people order and are served. they are going crazy over the pasta and saying how amazing and high quality and rich it tastes.

all of a sudden an announcement is made that they are eating Pizza Hut pasta, when they were under the impression it was from the nice restaurant they were at. the customers were shocked and pleasantly surprised!

shock value marketing works. but not if you incorporate it into street marketing with a VERY established brand. it's far too high risk.

and pasta being healthy? man, they sure are bold trying that out lol.

i'd stick to the same name and the tried and tested methods of advertising for this case. people who eat Pizza Hut are their fixed target market. they will come to realize pasta is served as well. any new customers can be targeted using prime time tv spots.
